The likely result is you have been infected with a rogue anti spyware program.  This spyware is also called “scareware”.  The intention is to frighten the computer owner into installing and buying their deadly software.  The program does not remove any spyware or viruses but in fact infects your computer further while scamming you out of money and stealing your confidential information.  Whatever you do, avoid downloading any software advertised within the warning message.  This is actually the easy way to tell a fake, real Windows warnings do not provide a link to download specific software.

How did your computer become infected?  There could be quite a few causes:

  • You recently downloaded shareware, freeware, or some other some other “bundled” software.  These programs are  usually “free” for a reason, in order to recoup the cost of development the software creators will add hidden spyware, adware, and viruses.
  • You downloaded music or other files through a P2P file sharing program
  • You visited an malcious website that hijacked your browser.  A lot of “free” giveaway websites, pornographic, and even song lyric websites are loaded with spyware.  Without some sort of protection they can easily infect your computer.
